Samsung’s 4K SUHD and Tizen technology showcase this year’s TV lineup

4K UHD displays are rolling out in huge numbers this year, with many manufacturers 2015 line-up consisting of almost all 4K models. Samsung is part of this growing change-over from 1080p to 4K displays.

This year Samsung is offering no less than nine new 4K UHD J Series displays with screen sizes ranging from 40″ to 88″ for a wide variety of choices for consumers.

The top of the line SUHD Series LED TVs include the JS9500 (featuring full-array backlighting with local dimming), JS9100, JS9000 and JS8500 with nine available screen sizes from 48″ to 88″. The JS9500, JS9100 and JS9000 are curved models.

Suggested retail price for the 88″ JS9500 is $17,999.99, the 78″ JS9500 is $8,999.99 and the 65″ JS9500 is $3,999.99 – all models available now. The 65″ JS9000 (available now) retails for $2,999.99, and the 55″ and 48″ JS9000 retail for $1,999.99 and $1,599.99 respectively (both models available now). The JS8500 is now available in 65″($1,999.99), 55″($1,499.99) and the 48″($1,299.99). The 78″ (only screen size) JS9100 is available now with a retail price of $6,999.99.

Key features in this line include Nano-Crystal display technology which is Samsung’s variant of quantum dot technology. This allows for a wider color gamut providing more dynamic and vivid color reproduction.

To further enhance color performance on the SUHD Series, Samsung is applying DCI P3 formatting. This quantum color technology provides wider and more accurate color with 64 times enhanced  color detail.

In addition, a new and improved 10-bit panel, Samsung’s SUHD TVs are capable of displaying a multitude of colors with fine steps of gradation. With so many more colors to express, you’ll see a picture that is more detailed and natural when compared to conventional 8-bit panels. This panel also displays deeper blacks and enhanced contrast for crystal clarity and reduces glare.

This series will also incorporate HDR (High Dynamic Range) for a brighter more realistic picture image with greater contrast. This process is applied locally and specifically to certain bright areas of the image to improve highlight detail and enhance realism.

Probably the boldest move by Samsung this year is introducing its own OS called Tizen for its smart TV platform on all 2015 models. One benefit of Samsung’s Tizen smart TV software will be its ability to automatically search for and connect to nearby Samsung mobile devices, making convergence seamless and further enhancing the idea of the multi-screen experience.

Users will also be able to watch TV and live broadcast on their mobile devices while on their home network, even if their television is turned off.

The JS9500 and JS9000 SUHD models will contain the X8-Octa-Core-processor. While the JS8500 and JS850D SUHD models will have a X4-Quad-Core processor.

Update: Samsung recently added the JS850D, JS8600 and JS7000 to the SUHD Series. Features include: Nano Crystal Color (quantum dot), Peak Illuminator Pro, Precision Black, Contrast Enhancer, a Quad-Core processor and Tizen OS smart TV platform. And according to Samsumg’s website, the JS7000 features full-array backlighting. No pricing and availability date for the JS850D.

The JS850D is only available in a 65″ screen. The JS8600 ($5,999.99) is only available in a 78″ screen size. The JS7000 is available in 60″, 55″ and 50″ screen sizes with pricing at $1,299.99, $999.99 and $799.99 respectively. The JS7000 and JS8600 are available now.

All standard J Series models (6700 Series and above) are provided with a new redesigned touchpad smart remote control. The remote’s built-in microphone is used to perform voice commands, or the remote can be used like a mouse and simply point-and-click to operate TV functions.

In addition, all J Series models feature built-in Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct.

In case you were wondering what the “S” prefix in SUHD stands for, it’s merely a moniker (name) Samsung uses for its high-end televisions.

Additional non-SUHD Samsung J Series models include:

  • I couldn’t find anything about the “D”. What’s the difference between JS8500 and JS850D? Thanks for your quick response.

    • Hi Richard,
The “D” designation means the TV is only sold in stores and is not available for retail sale online. So the difference between the JS8500 and the JS850D is that the 850D is only sold in stores. The features and specifications are the same.
