Now offering Vidrian mini-LED backlight technology and THX Certified Game Mode

TCL continues to make a strong presence in the U.S. market by delivering affordable TVs with good performance and quality which improves with each model year. Over the past few years, TCL has become one of my favorite budget brands that I can confidently recommend to anyone seeking a TV that offers great value in the way of performance/features vs. cost.

For 2020 TCL has improved its Mini-LED backlight technology that the company introduced on last year’s 8-Series. It is now reported that their Mini-LED technology will trickle down to this year’s 6-Series which will allow more consumers who weren’t willing to pay the extra cost for the 8 Series to acquire this promising technology.

Last year TCL offered QLED technology only on its 8-Series and 6-Series models. Now, for 2020, TCL will offer QLED technology on its 5-Series models. QLED TVs use quantum dot LEDs to produce a picture image and have an advantage over traditional LEDs in the form of better color reproduction, and are capable of delivering 100% color volume in the P3 color space, boosting color saturation and delivering purer more vibrant colors at all brightness levels.

New features for 2020

TCL will offer HDMI 2.1 support on select models which I assume will be their 8-Series and possibly the 6-series. I will update this article once more info becomes available on which models will offer HDMI 2.1 support. HDMI 2.1 allows for 4K @ 120Hz/fps, higher bandwidth up to 48 Gbps, eARC, VRR (variable refresh rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). VVR and ALLM enhance video gaming.

TCL will further enhance video gameplay by being the first TV manufacturer to offer THX Certified Game Mode. This feature will provide visual enhancements in color and contrast. Furthermore, you’ll also gain a competitive edge with the most optimal viewing experience possible; so you will never miss the action due to image smear, response time, or input lag.

Also new for 2020, TCL will offer its first-ever Android smart TVs. TCL will only be offering the Android smart TV platform on its latest 3-Series models. The 3-Series will have Chromecast built-in. All other TCL series’ will still offer the Roku TV smart platform.
