Samsung’s H7150 Series of 1080p flat-screen TVs is near the top tier of their 2014 line-up, second only to the company’s top-of-the-line H8000 Series. So if you’re looking for top-notch picture quality you will definitely find it in the UN55H7150 which is the focus of this review.

Design/Features

The H7150 is a very attractive display featuring an ultra-slim black bezel which gives the TV a frameless appearance, and the depth of this display measures less than 2” thick.

Another stand-out feature of this TV is the sled-style stand. I really like this arching design which runs the entire length of the set and extends outward several inches from the panel both front and back. This design gives the H7150 very good stability and will greatly reduce accidental TV tip-overs.

The UN55H7150 has several notable features including Samsung’s edge-lit backlighting technology entitled Micro Dimming Pro, which enhances contrast, black levels, color and sharpness (detail) covering 288 zones for a more accurate and true-to-life picture.

Samsung’s Ultra Clear Panel technology absorbs ambient light; therefore reducing screen glare allowing for a much better picture in a bright viewing environment. It also produces deeper blacks and enhanced contrast for improved picture quality.

This set also has a new Quad-Core Processor for better performance while using the TV’s web browser and smart TV applications.

Speaking of smart TV apps, the H7150 features Samsung’s Smart Hub with hundreds of apps in its line-up. You get movies and TV shows from Netflix, Vudu, HuluPlus, HBO GO and Amazon Instant Video to name a few. Music apps are covered with Pandora, TuneIn, vTuner and more. There is also a full web browser for all of your internet activities.

Facebook and Twitter are available for your social networking. You also get access to YouTube and many more of your favorite apps.

Connecting to your home’s computer network is made possible with a wired or wireless connection to the TV. You also get Wi-Fi direct which allows you to connect this display directly to any other Wi-Fi device, therefore by-passing your home’s router network.

This set also has a dual-screen function that allows you to view two different sources at once. For example, you can watch your favorite TV show while surfing the web or enjoying one of your favorite apps. Pretty cool.

The UN55H7150 delivers decent audio quality for a thin flat panel display. This is made possible by the TV’s DTS Premium Sound enhancements along with two satellite (main speakers) and two onboard woofers. However, much better sound can be obtained with a dedicated soundbar.

For all who enjoy 3D viewing, this set is 3D-ready and comes with 2 pairs of active 3D glasses.

Samsung 65HU9000 remote

The touch-pad remote features a compact oval-shaped design that fits nicely in the palm of your hand and has a well-spaced and good button layout for easy operation. The remote also features voice recognition and point-and-click functionality which can be useful for web browsing.

Connection Ports

The H7150 has 5 audio/video inputs including:

  • 4 HDMI ports
  • 1 component video shared with composite

Other connections include:

  • RF input for antenna/cable signals
  • 1 optical digital audio output
  • Stereo minijack output for connecting  a sound bar and other devices
  • Ethernet port for a wired connection to your home’s network
  • 3 USB inputs for a camera and thumb drive

Performance

After evaluating the UN55H7150, it was clear to me this set was all about excellent picture performance… the images it produced were very eye-catching with rich vibrant colors, excellent contrast and very good black level detail for an LED display. I’m sure the sets Micro Dimming Pro and Ultra Clear Panel technologies had a lot to do with these results.

Image depth, clarity and fine detail were very good on this display and were some of the best I’ve seen on a1080p TV.

Picture uniformity was excellent on this set, and again this was due in part to the Micro Dimming Pro process. The images had no hot-spotting, clouding, or dimming areas on the display’s screen.

Side angle viewing was about average on this set and suffered from some minor dimming as I moved to wider viewing angles, but was on par with other LED TVs on the market that deliver good performance and build quality.

I did not experience any motion blur with the content I viewed on this set. This was most likely due to this displays 240Hz refresh rate and Samsung’s 960 Clear Motion technology which reduces motion blur on sports broadcasts and fast action movie content.

I was able to do a brief side-by-side comparison of the UN55H7150 to Samsung’s UN55H6350 which is two tiers lower and part of the company’s less expensive H6350 Series.

The picture quality between these two TVs was readily apparent with the H7150 delivering better picture quality with a more refined image in the way of detail, clarity and image depth along with a bit more sharpness and color vibrancy.

However, the UN55H6350 still delivered good picture quality by comparison.

It should be noted that the H6350 Series does not feature Micro Dimming technology, which I believe played a part in the H7150’s better picture performance.

Conclusion

Samsung’s UN55H7150 is loaded with useful features and produces excellent picture performance with a reasonable price tag. It delivers one of LED’s best full 1080p image quality currently available on the market and is one of my top picks for 2014. Highly recommended.
