Samsung Adds New Model to Their SUHD Lineup

The UN78JS9100 was recently added to its 2015 SUHD premium series of 4K Ultra HD TVs. This series also includes the JS9500, JS900, JS8500 and JS850D.

The JS9100 is only available in a 78″ curved screen and is currently available with a retail price of $9,999.99.

My first question regarding this new display was how does it differ from the JS9500 and the JS9000?

To shed some light on this question I headed over to Samsung’s website and did a model comparison among these three displays. What I discovered was very few differences with these TVs.  The JS9500 is the only model that contains full-array LED backlighting and a built-in pop-up camera. And the only difference I could find between the 9100 and the 9000 was the omission of 3D capability on the 9100.

So,  with very few differences among these three “9” series models, I had to ask myself a second question… why did Samsung release the JS9100? The answer I ended up with, of course, is my own opinion and speculation.

I believe it had to do with available screen sizes and pricing. Let me explain. The SUHD Series is available in nine-screen sizes ranging from 48″ to 88″. Samsung offers two models in this series with 78″ screens – the JS9500 and the JS9100. The JS9500 version sells for just under $15,000, which is very expensive in my opinion. However, the JS9100 version has a more affordable but still expensive price tag of just under $10,000.

So for potential buyers looking for a 70″+ Class 4K UHD display, Samsung has provided a second much more affordable option.

I would like to hear your thoughts and comments on this topic.
