In this year’s new lineup, two of the displays use mini-LEDs, the flagship Bravia 9 and mid-tier Bravia 7. The Bravia 3 is Sony’s entry-level 4K TV in 2024 and uses standard LEDs. The Bravia 3 does not have local dimming.
The Bravia 8 is the only new OLED model for 2024 and replaces the A80L, except for the 83” A80L, which is carrying over from 2023. The Bravia 8 uses a WOLED panel (not QD-OLED).
Sony claims the Bravia 8 will deliver a 10% increase in peak brightness compared to the A80L, but general image quality will be about the same. Sony also claims design tweaks as the main upgrade for the Bravia 8 over its predecessor. The company says the Bravia 8 is 31% thinner than its 2023 predecessor, and its bezel is 29% slimmer. It also has an updated four-way stand.
As mentioned earlier, the Bravia 9 is the top model in Sony’s 2024 lineup whereas in the past few years, it’s been an OLED model that has held the top spot in Sony’s TV lineup. And speaking of OLED models, last year’s flagship TV from Sony was the A95L OLED TV. It remains to be seen if the Bravia 9 will rival the picture quality of the A95L. The good news is that the A95L is carrying over to 2024. The A95L was considered the best TV of 2023 by many reviewers and enthusiasts alike.
So, what does the Bravia 9 have to offer? The Bravia 9 offers Sony’s most advanced Mini LED backlight system yet using XR Backlight Master Drive technology. Sony claims the Bravia 9 is their brightest TV ever and has up to 325% more dimming zones than last year’s X95L mini-LED TV.
Sony also claims to have developed the smallest LED controllers (22-bit mini-LED driver) on the market, allowing for finer local dimming control. This, in turn, reduces blooming around small objects, as the TV can dim more tightly around small areas of the screen, and it improves brightness gradation, so you’ll see more of a brightness difference in fine details.
The Bravia 9 video processing is handled by Sony’s enhanced XR Processor which intelligently enhances every scene in real-time boosting color, contrast, and clarity. This processor handles 4K X-Reality PRO, XR Clear Image, XR Triluminos PRO, and XR Motion Clarity (120Hz native refresh rate). The Bravia 9 also features Sony’s X-Wide Angle” for consistent viewing angles and “X-Anti Reflection” to help eliminate screen glare. The Bravia 9 also adds a pair of upward-firing beam tweeters to its acoustic multi-audio system for more immersive surround sound.
In addition, the Bravia 9 ships with a premium four-way stand – two low-profile positions for wide or narrow furniture, or two raised positions to accommodate a soundbar.
The Bravia 9 replaces last year’s X95L.
Moving on to the Sony Bravia 7. The BRAVIA 7 uses mini-LEDs for backlighting with local dimming and has a QLED panel, yet it isn’t as bright as the flagship Bravia 9 mini-LED model. It will offer high contrast and is said to have similar performance to last year’s X95L which was Sony’s flagship LED TV last year. The Bravia 7 uses the XR Processor to power Sony’s XR Backlight Master Drive, 4K X-Reality PRO, XR Clear Image, XR Triluminos PRO, and XR Motion Clarity (120 Hz native refresh rate). This series also uses Sony’s four-way stand. The Bravia 7 replaces the 2023 Sony X93L.
Next, the Bravia 3 is the entry-level model in Sony’s 4K LED TV Bravia lineup. This model uses Direct LED backlighting but without local dimming. The Bravia 3 will use Sony’s X1 processor, driving 4K X-Reality Pro, Triluminos Pro, and Motionflow XR 240 (60 Hz native refresh rate) processing systems.
As mentioned earlier, the carryover models from last year are the A95L (OLED), A80L (OLED) 83″ only, and the X90L (LED).
